International Medical Corps regrets to announce the passing of David Majagira, Country Director in Burundi, on August 5, 2009. Mr. Majagira had been in his hometown of Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), when his health failed him at the age of 46.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our special colleague, David Majagira. His compassionate and skillful leadership helped improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people in Burundi and Chad,” said International Medical Corps President & CEO Nancy Aossey. “Our hearts go out to David’s family. We will truly miss him.”
He took over International Medical Corps operations in Burundi in 2008, where he oversaw long-term development programs that focused on primary health care and nutrition services of returning refugees, as well as the treatment and prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.
Mr. Majagira received a Bachelor’s and then Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the State University of New York-Buffalo’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning. He also attended the Lester B. Pearson Peacekeeping Center in Canada and received a diploma from the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon, France.
